The Lygon/Ligon Family History

EX FIDE FORTIS

In 1066 ACE, the Lygons and Beauchamps arrived in England with William the Conqueror, marking the beginning of their prominent lineage. Their prestigious status within English society and close ties to the Crown are evident through their association with Madresfield Court and the Knights of the Garter, as reflected by the many Lygon and Beauchamp names adorning the walls of St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

Throughout history, the Lygons have remained dedicated to the monarchy, serving as loyal servants, close friends, and relatives to various royal houses. Their influence can be seen in the positions they have held, such as Lord Stewards of the Royal Household, Ladies-in-waiting to the Queen, Gentlemen of the Household, and even Prime Ministers. The royal lineage of every English monarch since King Henry VII can be traced back to the Beauchamp family, thanks to Lady Margaret Beauchamp, King Henry's maternal grandmother.

The strong familial bond between the Lygons and the royal family is exemplified through Princess Diana, who had direct ancestral ties to the Lygon family from the 16th century. The Lygons and Beauchamps continue to be integral to the current royal household, with their connections spanning three direct lines. Over the years, the Lygons have welcomed numerous members of the royal family as guests, fostering a lasting relationship.

Madresfield Court, a historical symbol of the Lygon family's constancy, has played a pivotal role in safeguarding the United Kingdom and the royal family during times of crisis. Designated as a Royal Refuge during King George III's reign, the court provided a safe haven in case of a potential Napoleonic invasion. In World War II, Madresfield Court once again fulfilled its role as a sanctuary, offering protection to Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret amidst the Nazi bombings and the looming threat of invasion.

In America, the Lygon legacy continued through Sir William Berkeley, who arrived in 1641 as the Royal Governor of the Colony of Virginia. Accompanying him was his second cousin, Colonel Thomas Lygon, who went on to establish the American branch of the family by marrying Mary Harris. The American Ligons, along with their Berkeley relatives, played influential roles in shaping the emerging American nation, producing two governors of Virginia and numerous colonial leaders. Notably, General George Washington, the first President of the United States, had direct connections to both the Berkeleys and the Lygons.

The Lygons' heritage of graciousness and warm hospitality extends beyond England, as demonstrated by their generous welcome extended to their American cousins. This inclusivity led to the transfer of historical records and the publication of Volume I of The Ligon Family & Connections in 1947 and as more information was gathered another volume was drafted and published in 1957; Volume II of The Ligon Family & Connections;, showcasing the enduring bond between the Lygon family and their American counterparts.
